Union Chapel Restoration

About: Union Chapel was envisioned to the centerpiece of the community. The work of Samuel Pratt Freeman in 1870, the octagonal design rises into a soaring open cupola with amber diamond-pane windows. A prominent feature on the Oak Bluffs skyline, the structure rose in successive angular roof planes, each broken by a high and steep gable end, topped with an ornamental peak of iron. On four of the eight sides were entrances and over each rose a steepled upper porch, with fretted woodwork and a balcony railing of ornamentally pierced boards. Wind and time eventually took their toll and practically forced the removal of much of the ornamental exterior construction. The Preservation Trust has embarked on an ambitious plan to restore the beloved chapel to its full glory.
